Seeking union of mind, body and spirit crosses all schools of yoga. Connecting in this transformative way is the light and fire of a true yoga practice. Without mindfulness, there are only mundane routines and clever techniques. Kripalu means compassion. No one directs you to a Path; you are empowered to self-ignite inner experiences through healthy alignment in postures (asana), consciousness and control of breath (pranayama), meditation, and relaxation (shavasana), all of which function as stepping-stones to life’s mystical journey.
Feeling in tune with your whole being in the moment, gracing yourself with acceptance of who you are, is the heart and soul of what is practiced not only “on the mat” but even more so in daily life – called yoga “off the mat”. This is where the most profound benefits of yoga begin to emerge. While blessings of softer hamstrings and a stronger, more flexible back are satisfying, and a deep forward bend can be a thing of great beauty, these pale in comparison to embracing life at a more intimate level. Through diligent practice, you develop more space and stamina to be with your authentic self in both light and shadow.
Steady practice of the classic yoga postures is the first stage. In the second stage postures are held longer as concentration and inner awareness is developed. The third stage is about honouring the wisdom of the body, allowing the ego to be the witness and the body to be the true teacher.
